I deployed to Kabul in 2013 as an enlisted intelligence analyst with no design background or technical training, just operational experience working with intelligence systems under mission-critical conditions.

The tools we used had significant gaps. Intelligence reporting that should have been rapid took hours because systems weren't integrated. Critical information that needed to reach coalition partners remained in classified systems because the declassification and disclosure workflows were so complex that analysts often bypassed them entirely. Time-sensitive intelligence would lose its operational value by the time it moved through the required approval processes and technical systems.

When I transitioned out of the military, I made a clear decision: I would build the tools I wished I'd had access to during my deployment.

My focus wasn't on abstract user personas, it was on soldiers, federal agents, and operators still conducting the work I'd done, still working around systems that should be enabling them.

The cost of slow information flow in operational environments is measured in mission effectiveness and personnel safety.

I transitioned into product design specifically to solve federal and military operational challenges. Not consumer-facing applications, but the complex systems work of making federal evidence management, intelligence sharing, and operational tools function in the field conditions where they're actually deployed.

My background as context

Intelligence Analyst & Designated Disclosure Authority,
Kabul, Afghanistan

As an intelligence analyst, I understood the criticality of information classification, compartmentalization, and need-to-know principles

Intelligence Analyst

Designated Disclosure Authority

As a Designated Disclosure Authority, I managed the controlled release of classified information to coalition partners, essentially solving a cross-domain sharing problem in real-time operational conditions.

Product Development & Systems Architecture

Operating beyond borders

My primary function was chasing down where the federal use cases were not a 1:1 match for the current ecosystem.

Information Architect

Seamless Integration

Design the protective layer that let federal agencies use Axon products without compromising security or operational effectiveness.

System design for the federal overlay

Translating failure modes

Translate State Language to Federal Context

Ensured terminology, workflows, and UI patterns matched federal mental models.

Operational Continuity

Catered to 54 Federal agencies different operational needs.

Cross-domain sharing architecture

Creating community partnerships

Federal agencies need to share down to local partners, but the reverse path has strict controls. I designed the asymmetric sharing workflows based on classification level, agency relationships, and operation type.

Cloud migration

Translate State Language to Federal Context

Federal agencies have years of evidence. I designed the migration pathways ensuring evidence integrity.

Axon Corrections

2022-2023

Operational Context: New Setting, New Problems

Understand the unique constraints of corrections environments for body-worn cameras and translate those insights into design and deployment requirements for patrol-designed technology.

Enable police body camera connection into a live-streaming command center with field devices, and mobile communications, delivering 24/7 real-time situational awareness to law enforcement agencies.

Feature Highlights

Real-Time Video Streaming

Live feeds from multiple device types simultaneously

Event Management

Live operational picture through unified visibility, actionable intelligence and rapid response

Instant Alert System

GPS-enabled location tracking with visual heat mapping

Complete evolving situations on any device anywhere so agencies see more, decide and act faster

Situational Awareness

Dynamic Officer Mapping

Push notifications for critical incidents and backup requests

Communications

Collaborate between command, field and partner agencies

Design Impact

Faster, Smarter Dispatching

A unified 911 and response system helps agencies reduce time-to-dispatch and match officers to each call with better information and greater confidence.

Safety as a Real-Time Practice

Live visibility into officer location and situation allows dispatch and supervisors to actively support officer safety, rather than only reacting after an incident escalates.

Shared View, Smoother Coordination

When officers share a real-time picture of the incident, coordination in the field becomes clearer, with less duplication of effort and on‑scene confusion.

Command Decisions Driven by Data

Giving supervisors a single view of calls, units, and incidents leads to more deliberate, data‑informed decisions about how to deploy resources and support front‑line officers.

Research and design in critical environments.

Conducted multi-site field research nationwide. Logged 350+ hours in police ride-alongs. Visited over a dozen agencies. Shadowed dispatchers for 150+ hours. Observed centers processing 9,000+ daily calls.

Developed thousands of user requirements. Replaced legacy dispatch software. Developed risk analysis for design standards. Collaborated with pilot customers. Conducted dual-perspective interviews. Engaged patrol, SWAT, and homicide units. Mapped user needs in critical 24/7 environments. Accounted for 60mph vehicle motion. Founding designer for Federal team. Launched features across 54 Federal agencies. Created scalable UI systems to accommodate 10-100+ simultaneous device streams. Balanced information density with cognitive load for high-stress use cases prioritizing critical alerts. Defined offline resilience for connectivity-limited scenarios.

Modernized mission-critical infrastructure. Built real-time search experiences. Analyzed technical policies. Audited camera infrastructure and retention. Defined sensor integration requirements. Connected dozens of third-party integrations. Mapped metadata discrepancies. Anticipated data continuity risks. Connected cameras to real-time crime centers. Improved situational awareness. Optimized response strategies. Ensured chain of custody.
